Anterior Skull Base Surgery

Treatment Details

What is anterior skull base surgery?

This is a surgical technique used to treat tumors that grow at the base of the skull, typically behind the eyes, and nose. Since their location is very close to the critical nerves and blood vessels in the brain, head, neck and spinal cord, these are regarded as being extremely complicated to treat.

How dangerous are tumors that grow on the anterior skull base?

Tumors in this area are extremely dangerous, including benign (non-cancerous) ones since they can cause significant vision or hearing loss and effects on growth, hormone production, fertility or balance.
How is anterior skull base surgery performed?

Over the past decade, a number of new minimally invasive surgical techniques have been developed that enable the removal of many skull based tumors without the need for large and potentially dangerous incisions to be made in the face and head. Surgeons often use endoscopic instruments to remove tumors through the nostrils or through tiny incisions in the eyebrow or the back of the ear.
