Angiogram

Angiogram in Begur

Angiography is a diagnostic procedure that utilises x-ray images to understand the blockages in arteries and veins causing hindrance to smooth blood flow. A contrast material (dye) is injected to enhance the clarity of images. The dye circulates, highlighting the affected areas, making it easier for a doctor to investigate the root cause of the blockage.

Angiography helps to detect diseases such as atherosclerosis, peripheral arterial disease, a brain aneurysm, angina, blood clots or pulmonary embolism, etc.

Pre-procedural Requirements

For an angiogram in Begur, you’ll need to have a blood test to check your kidney function – the kidneys need to remove the dye from your body, so it’s important to check they are working well. You don't have to fast on the day of the procedure, and you should usually take all your regular medication.

Procedure

The procedure for the same includes the following basic steps

  • The individual is asked to lie down on the examiner's table next to the x-ray screen and provided a sedative to calm him down.

  • Then local anaesthesia is administered to the place where a cut will be drawn to numb the area, and after a few minutes, a small incision is made.

  • Then the blood vessel is accessed using a needle, and a delicate tube called a catheter is slid over the needle till its tip comes in contact with the affected area.

  • Then dye is injected, which passes via a catheter, and a series of 3-D x-ray images are taken to record the movement of the dye through blood vessels. The X-ray images created during angiography are called angiograms.

  • If blockages are located, then they may be treated by angioplasty.

Time Taken

This procedure may take between 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the severity of the blockages.

Risks

Though this is considered a minimally invasive procedure, it has certain potential risks ranging from bruising and soreness to a very small lump formation near the cut. There is a very small (about one in 3,000) risk of a stroke or short-term symptoms that mimic a stroke. This is more likely if you are frail.

Post Angiography Procedure

The medical practitioner will remove the catheter and bandaid it or cover the area where the cut was drawn with a plastic cuff. Then gently press the area for 4-5 minutes to avoid bleeding from the ruptured area.

Angiogram Recovery

The patient may go home the same day but must be accompanied by another person as the anaesthesia effect will take time to disappear. In some cases, the patient is asked to have an overnight stay at the hospital to monitor the recovery process. To avoid bleeding, one must not indulge in any strenuous work or lift anything heavy. You will usually be encouraged to drink more water after the procedure to flush out the dye, which is particularly important for those with kidney problems. Book an appointment at Manipal Hospitals.
