The Children’s Airway and Swallowing Centre (CASC) is an interdisciplinary super-specialty unit of Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road, Bangalore, established in 2000 to tackle airway and swallowing issues in children, enabling world-class treatment and last-mile connectivity. Each year, our specialists transform the lives of 50-60 children at this centre, giving them a chance at a healthier future.
Disorders of airway and swallowing require a team drawn from Intensive Care, Otolaryngology, Paediatric Surgery, Pulmonology, Gastroenterology, Anaesthesiology, and Swallowing Therapy to help these children out of the hospital into their homes. Doctors from all specializations at Manipal Hospitals run the Centre for free, and donations have funded it for 25+ years in India. Diverse treatment options, from consultation to advanced surgery to intensive care and swallowing therapy, are available for underprivileged children in India and abroad.
The Centre also focuses on enhancing the quality of care and training medical professionals in the latest surgical and therapeutic procedures. “Our dedication extends beyond hospital care”, as illustrated by Dr. E. V. Raman, who emphasized the importance of educational programs that train medical professionals, nurses, and caregivers to assist parents in caring for children with special needs, even after going home.
Over the past 25 years, this partnership has been nothing short of revolutionary, with CASC treating over 2,000+ patients and creating a remarkable multiplier effect in paediatric airway care.
International experts, with Cincinnati physicians at the forefront, have been instrumental in developing a comprehensive approach to medical education and intervention. Their involvement goes far deeper than mere surgical procedures. By conducting live surgical demonstrations, these specialists provide hands-on training that allows local surgeons to observe and learn cutting-edge techniques directly from world-renowned experts.
