Cervical spine surgery is done to relieve neck pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness, restore nerve function and stop or prevent abnormal motion in the neck. It is performed by removing a disk or a bone and fusing the vertebrae together with a bone graft in front of or behind the spine. The bone graft is of two types: Autograft: It is a bone graft which is taken from patient’s own body. Allograft: It is a bone graft which is taken from other person body and it takes longer to incorporate into a recipient’s body.

Spinal Decompression Surgery

Spinal decompression surgery is a general term used to define many surgical procedures used to cure or relieve back pain caused by the compression (or pressure) on the spinal cord and/or the nerve roots The compression is often caused by age-related issues or changes like arthritis, bulging discs, enlarged joints, bone spurs, and thickened ligaments. The surgery is performed anywhere along the spine starting from the neck (cervical) to the lumbar region (lower back).

Cervical Spine Surgery

Cervical spine surgery is done to relieve neck pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness, restore nerve function and stop or prevent abnormal motion in the neck It is performed by removing a disk or a bone and fusing the vertebrae together with a bone graft in front of or behind the spine. The bone graft is of two types:
Autograft: It is a bone graft which is taken from patient’s own body.

Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty

A compression fracture or breaking of a vertebra can cause a lot of pain and hampers movement, making it difficult to move around. This is because the bone fragments rub against each other resulting in pain and discomfort Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty are surgical procedures that help in treating these fractures. During a vertebroplasty, the doctor injects a cement mixture into the bone to help in strengthening it. A Kyphoplasty is similar to the vertebroplasty, but here, a balloon is inserted and inflated to create an opening through which the cement is injected inside.
A Kyphoplasty is also called as balloon vertebroplasty, and these two procedures are often performed together.

Laminectomy

The lamina is the back part of the vertebra that protects the spinal canal by covering it. When there is excess pressure on the spinal cord or nerves, it causes radiating pain and numbness. This occurs due to bony overgrowths I the spinal canal that result in the narrowing down of space available for the spinal cord and nerves. A laminectomy is a procedure where the lamina is removed surgically to reduce the pressure on the spine and nerves by enlarging the spinal canal and creating space. It is a reliable surgery as it relieves the radiating pain especially in cases where the pain is caused by nerve compression.

Microdiscectomy

Microdiscectomy or microdecompression is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to reverse a herniated lumbar disc that causes utter discomfort to the patient. It is a simple procedure where the surgeon removes the portions of the herniated disc in order to relieve the pressure on the spinal nerve column that causes pain and discomfort to the patient. Microdiscectomy in simple is a surgical treatment that cures back pain and leg pain caused by the herniated disc.

FAQ's

The doctor recommends cervical spine surgery for a variety of spinal neck problems, but generally, it is performed for degenerative disorders, trauma or instability.
The conditions which are treated through cervical spine surgery are:

Degenerative Disc Disease:
In this condition, the discs between the vertebrae shrink which causes wearing of the disc and leads to herniation. You may also have arthritic areas in the spine. It causes pain numbness, tingling, and weakness from the pressure of the spinal nerves.
Fracture:
Broken spinal bone
Scoliosis:
It is a medical condition in which a spine’s has a sideways curve
Spinal stenosis:
It is defined as a narrowing of the spaces within the spine, which can put pressure on the nerves that travel through the spine.
Spondylolisthesis:
It is a condition which affects the lower vertebrae.

The surgeon will ask you for some blood tests and spinal X-rays one week before the surgery. Make sure to get a list of the medicines you can or you can’t take before or after the surgery.

Cervical spine surgery is performed to treat either spinal cord impingement or spinal instability. The surgeon can reach the cervical spine from the front (anterior approach) or the back (posterior approach).
The surgeon makes the incision and moves the muscles and structures to the side to see the spine. The joints or joints between the damaged or inflamed disks are removed. Pieces of bone, screws or rods are used to connect the discs and keep them from moving. The surgery usually takes several hours.

After surgery, the doctor will ask you to stay at the hospital for 4-5 days. your Stay usually depends on your general fitness level and if you any other medical conditions. Physical therapists and occupational therapists will teach you how to get out of bed, into a chair, and walk again. After ten days surgeon will remove your stitches and will call you for follow-up appointments. It takes around six months to a year to fully heal.
