Hemodialysis is a treatment for patients suffering from end-stage renal disease (ESRD) performed in a centre several times per week. The process mimics the natural process which takes place inside the kidneys. It may also be used as a backup mechanism until a compatible donor is found for a transplant.

The dialyser is separated into two sections: one for blood and the other for a cleansing solution called dialysate. Vascular access is accomplished with a minor surgery with the insertion of an AV fistula or graft or a catheter. During hemodialysis, blood is filtered outside the body. Unfiltered blood is drawn from the body and directed to the dialyser for cleaning. The cleaned blood then flows back into the body.
