Treatments and Procedures
Hemodialysis is a treatment for patients suffering from end-stage renal disease
(ESRD) performed in
a centre several times per week. The process mimics the natural process which takes
place inside the
kidneys. It may also be used as a backup mechanism until a compatible donor is found
for a
transplant.
The dialyser is separated into two sections: one for blood and the other for a
cleansing solution
called dialysate. Vascular access is accomplished with a minor surgery with the
insertion of an AV
fistula or graft or a catheter. During hemodialysis, blood is filtered outside the
body. Unfiltered
blood is drawn from the body and directed to the dialyser for cleaning. The cleaned
blood then flows
