Start with the right food

You must have heard that carrots promote eye health. That’s true! Beta-carotene, a form of vitamin A in such orange colored foods is good for the retina and other parts of the eye. Green leafy vegetables, which are packed with antioxidants, can protect your eyes from cataract and other degenerative disorders. Eggs contain zinc in addition to the antioxidants required for healthy vision. Citrus fruits, which are the powerhouses of vitamin C, can reduce the risk of developing a cataract. A handful of almonds can provide you the daily dose of vitamin E required for healthy eyes. Fatty fishes such as salmon, tuna, etc. are rich in the omega-3 fatty acids found in your retina.

Go for green tea

Swap that cup of coffee you want to have with green tea. It is not only hydrating but is loaded with antioxidants which protect the eye tissues.

Know your family history

If anyone in of your family has had a history of inheritable eye disorders such as glaucoma, cataract, retinal degeneration, etc., then you are at a high risk of developing them. Consult an eye specialist immediately if you find any case of eye disorder in your family line.

Get your eyes examined regularly

Abnormality in vision is independent of age. Even young children should get their eye examined regularly. Keep distance from the screen

Blink enough

It is true that while staring at the screen, the rate of blinking of our eyelids drops below the normal count of 15 to 20 times per minute. Blinking protects the cornea from drying out or feeling irritated. Follow the 20-20-20 rule; i.e. take a break every 20 minutes to stare at an object 20 feet far off for 20 seconds. This can reduce the strain on your eyes.

Exercise your eye muscles

A regular exercise is necessary to safeguard the health of your eyes. Strengthen your eye muscles by performing certain exercises regularly.

  • Palming is the act of providing the necessary warmth to your eyes. This can be done anywhere and at any time without strange looks from others. It can relieve your eyes from stress and relax them. Do not put much pressure while doing this.
  • Blinking is another simple but highly effective exercise for your eyes. Blink at least every 3-4 seconds. Try it now and feel the difference!
  • Focus on nearby and far off objects alternatively. Put your thumb 10 inches away from your eye and focus on it for some time. Now shift your focus onto some other object which is 10-20 feet apart. This improves your overall vision.
