How to Tackle Menopause

Menopause affects every woman differently.  Many find it to be a little stressful, mainly because of changing hormonal patterns and it’s effect on the body. Symptoms like night-time sweating and hot flashes are quite common during this time. However, most symptoms associated with menopause are temporary. In this blog, we’ll discuss a few tips, which may help relieve the symptoms of menopause:

1. Cool Down Hot Flashes:

Hot flashes are the most common symptom and it is necessary that we try and figure out the triggers for this. For many women, triggers may include hot beverages, caffeine, spicy foods, alcohol, stress, hot weather and even a warm room. Drinking cool water before going to bed may ease out the symptoms. Sleeping in a cool room, wearing loose and layered clothing may also help.

2. Practice Relaxation Techniques:

Techniques such as breathing exercises, massage and progressive muscle relaxation can help relieve menopausal symptoms. A variety of books and videos are available on this, which can help you.

3.  Exercise Regularly:

Menopause often brings along problems like arthritis, osteoporosis, etc. Regular exercise strengthens our bones and joints, making us better equipped to fight these problems. Physical activity also helps prevent diseases like heart attack, stroke and other age related issues.

4. Cut Down on Smokes and Alcohol:

We know that smoking and drinking does take a toll on our health. In women, it brings in an early menopause and also aggravates the symptoms of menopause.

5. Sleep Well:

Hot flashes and night sweating during menopause often disrupts sleep leading to tiredness or fatigue. In order to avoid sleeping problems during this period, cut down on caffeine and alcohol. Also, avoid exercising right before bedtime.

6. Eat Healthy:

A balanced diet is the solution to a lot of health problems. Including lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet along with limited intake of fats, oils and sugar can provide you relief from menopausal symptoms. Taking calcium and vitamin D supplements will help prevent bone problems that might occur during menopause.

7. De-Stress:

Our body goes through a lot of change during this time. Women go through major changes in their hormonal pattern, which also affects conjugal lives. This often causes a lot of mental stress. Hence, it is extremely important to maintain calm and relax during this time. Pursuing a hobby or involving your partner might help you de-stress.

Most women tend to ignore the symptoms of menopause. However, it is important to seek medical help during this time as it brings along several other health conditions.
