Icu & Critical Care
OverviewIntensive Care Units (ICU) provide high chances of survival for critically ill patients. Patients are admitted to the ICU in case of life threatening situations such as acute renal or liver failure, acute respiratory distress, cardiac failure, multiple organ failure, septic shock or coma. Many a times they are also admitted for close monitoring after major surgery. This move helps in stabilising the patient and reducing the chances of infection and other post operative complications. The ICUs at Manipal Hospitals cater to many specialities such as General Surgery, Gynaecology & Obstetrics, Dialysis & Kidney Transplants and Accident & Emergency Care to name a few. The intensive care comprises of various forms of life support and organ specific support care like mechanical ventilation, therapeutic hypothermia, chest tube, induced coma, use of vasoactive drugs and renal replacement therapy. The ICUs at Manipal Hospitals also provide the latest forms of ventilator support like the High Frequency Oscillator (HFO) and Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenator ECMO (commonly known as ‘Artificial Lung’).
The nurse-patient ratio stands at 1:1 for patients on ventilators and 1:2 for other cases. The units are supervised by an inclusive team of full time senior ICU specialists with extensive training and experience in critical care medicine. This highly professional team provides high-quality critical care to the patients in the ICUs and also conduct regular quality audits and training sessions to maintain care that is comparable with the best ICUs in the world.
